Daily Headline Deaths
Daily Headline Deaths is a pictograph visualization of human deaths reported on the front page of the New York Times Online from June 15—August 25, 2002. The web page is populated with one thousand icons of human figures which are slowly replaced by new icons representing how each reported death occurred.
A web page is populated by 1000 individual icons resembling human figures. Each icon represents a human being. From June 15th to August 25th 2002 one icon will disappear for each death reported on the front page of the New York Times Online. The space from which the icons disappear is populated by a new icon representing how the reported death(s) occurred. If the deaths occurred due to an act of aggression, the new icon will be accompanied by a flag or emblem representing the nation, organization or individual claiming responsibility. Below the icons are listed each day's death headline(s) with a link to the story. The project ends either on August 25th, 2002 or when all 1000 human icons have disappeared.
An archive of each day of the project is available on the page.
