Damon Hamm studied physics before receiving a B.A. in ‘studio art’ from Oberlin College in 1995. Influenced by such debunked sciences as phrenology, he creates sculptural works which act as reflections of our interactions with our bodies and machines. Machines intended as extensions of hands and minds; their elegance is an expression of the beautiful systems found within ourselves and nature.
Spending several years in the internet music world producing, directing, and editing interviews, concerts, and documentaries, Damon went back to school to receive a Master of Science degree from the Human-Computer Interaction Institute of Carnegie Mellon University in 2002.
Incorporating audio / visual, electronic, mechanical, and bio / medical elements, his new work incorporates custom electronics and embedded processors; experimenting with the creation of ‘natural systems’ and the perception of intelligence as a consequence of anthropomorphism. Damon’s main goal as an artist is to explore new methods of interaction by challenging his own technical boundaries and investigating new avenues of expression through the experiences of participating viewers.
